New to you sale at the VT Sheep & Wool Festival

http://vtsheepandwoolfest.com/new-to-you-sale/

We have 2 new family members

2 Jacob ewes came home with us tonight. Their owner's, fellow Christians!, were downsizing their folk and these were the last 2 to need a new home. Another shearing customer, thank you Joanne!, recommended us for shearing as well as a new home for the girls. They are 3 years old and registered. They will go in with the Horned Dorset for breeding later this month. But, for tonight and possibly until Monday, they are in the lambing pen/stall waiting to get used to us.

The other cool thing is upon looking at the registrations I realize that the original owner/breeder is a member of our spinning group.

I will take, and post, pictures tomorrow of Maple Hill Daisy May and Maple Hill Talula.

Have a good night all!

My daughter will appreciate this!!

I got to put mail in this little piggy!!

Wooly bear and winter prediction

What do you think? Do you think the wooly bear is agreeing with the Old Farmer's Almanac what the winter will be like.

This is what it says about our area (1/2 hour South) for the next 2 months and Nov. 2013 to Oct. 2014.

Taken 8/21/13. Shows how warm it was going to get today....I don't know how true it is, but the thermometer on the front covered porch reads 98 degrees at 11 am. I need to take more fleece pictures and get them on the blog. It is supposed to rain this afternoon and I will take advantage of that to do all of the inside 'stuff'.

TTFN!

I need to find my tripod in order to get some better shots of the moon, and the varmints around the farm!! My hands are shaking too much these days...

100 bales of 1st cut hay
We are done with hay until the hay man gets the 2nd cut done.
With all the rain we had this summer everything is very delayed!
When I went to lock the pigs in for the night, I was treated
to the full moon just starting to come up over the tree line.

Around the farm

Gizmo, the largest of the 3, feels he needs to lie in the feed bucket.

Washed Romney to be blended with the washed Mohair below.

Everyone needs a pet barn chicken. The rest were picking on her, and made
her comb and top of her head bleed. She's been happy in the barn for 2 weeks.

My neighbors honeybees love the ragweed.

 I love the garden spider!

 Can you see the honeybees?

Only 46 days until VT Sheep and Wool Festival!

And, I apologize that I am not real good about keeping this up-to-date! It seems it is quicker to get onto Face Book and post a line or two there. If you are not already following us, then click on this link and 'friend' the farm. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Ewe-I-Farm/208179205917180

I emptied the basement, and what was left in the horse trailer, and set them out on a large tarp. I need to go pull off the top tarp and set it on the ground under the skirting table. It will make clean up a lot quicker!! I will be taking pictures of various fleeces and FINALLY get them posted.

We have a double space this year at the VT Sheep & Wool Festival and one tent may end up being all sale fleeces! $5/bag for small and $10/bag for large. Same price on the fleece blog. The only fleeces not selling at that price will be the ones grown here. But, they will be 20% off the regular price for our 20th year as Ewe & I Farm. Hope to see you at the festival!!

Ragweed

My friend Pam told me this morning what this plant was. It is mixed in with my raspberry plants and my neighbor's honey bees go NUTS for it. I've never seen them have what I would know as a flower on them, but the bees legs were full of pollen. If it stops raining again, I will take pictures of the bees and the ragweed.
In the meantime, this is what Wikipedia has on it. I did not realize there were so many different kinds!

Piglets and flowers

The little piggies were let out of their yard for the first time today.
They did not stay out too long. I think me being in their area taking
pictures may have had something to do with that!

I gave Jerry the camera while I picked up glass.
Can you tell? There is a LOT of broken bottle glass...

Gizmo is trying to figure out what I am doing.

Lots of mint in front of the flowers.
The chickens love it.
 My hollyhock is stunted....
Don't know why. But, it is still pretty.
Today was a day of rest with a little work thrown in.
We went to church for the first time in months. (Shearing don't you know!)
Was nice to visit with folks that we'd not seen in a long while.
Put up a temporary fence (seen above) for the pigs to get out and root.
Picked up glass and plastic. A never ending job here. Jerry brings greens home from
Hannafords and there is always plastic in there. The glass was here before we moved in.
It is now threatening to rain, so we are in relaxing and watching Cedar Cove.
I really like Andie MacDowell as an actress.

Have a blessed Sunday all!

Darn chickens!!

This article helps me feel a little better, but I am still annoyed at  my girls....
http://www.backyardchickens.com/a/chicken-behaviours-and-egg-laying-why-are-my-hens-not-laying

55 hens and 1 rooster. Yesterday we got a dozen eggs. Today we only got 7. It is not hot out....they have free choice food and water in 3 different locations....they are locked in their run. So, I know that they are not hiding them. They are not molting. The coops are high enough, and the house secure enough, that I am not concerned about something in there eating them.... I am home all day Sunday. I will have a chance then to collect eggs every few hours. Last summer we were getting 5 dozen a day..... Granted we slaughtered 20+ birds last fall, but I kept the younger birds.

If we get the 'new' farm, I will need to look into getting chicks.... But, I will continue to feed them as they are still my pets!

Livestock & poultry information

http://extension.unh.edu/Food-Agriculture/Livestock-Poultry

Thinking of raising sheep?  http://extension.umaine.edu/publications/2186e/

And, I like the pig links. Especially this one. About the Cuts (How much meat comes from a 250 lb. (live weight) whole pig)  I also like that it shows you how to measure your pig to see if it is at butchering weight.

There is also lots of poultry information.

That is it for me tonight. It has been a long day and now it is bedtime.
