Happy Labor Day

I will still be laboring here on the farm today getting fleeces ready for the VT Sheep & Wool Festival October 1 & 2, and Wool Arts Tour the following weekend. Lots to unbag, check for debris, rebag, weigh and tag. Not to mention a little bit of picture taking!

Hubby and I moved electric netting to the front yard so that Stormy and his crew can finish mowing the front 'lawn' while I work on fleeces. Christopher and his crew will go out to the far back pasture today. Only another week of breeding and then everyone gets put back in their respective pens.

Stormy should be going to a 4-H farm Wednesday, and then his son Jeremy will go in to take his place for a few days. Lambing should start January 16th, 2017 and end by February 7th. Lambs will then leave the farm in time for Easter, April 16th. Both Christian and Orthodox Easter are the same day next year. That was the main reason for lambing so early. Hopefully the lambs won't be too big. Maybe the 'meat man' will take some in March and the rest in April. All I can do is call and ask. I just don't want to get 'stuck' carrying lambs over until they are 4 months or more...

In the meantime haying is on hold. Waiting for a call from Town Line Equipment in Plainfield, NH on a part we had to order for the new-to-us disc mower. In his spare time hubby has been working on the Pitman arm of the mower conditioner to get that up and running. Doing a 9' swath while mowing as opposed to 4' will make a BIG difference in the fields time wise. The little one will then be used for edging and other places the big one won't go. Next year will also be easier on us as I am making payments on a round baler. So looking forward to the tractor doing ALL the heavy lifting and not hubby. He said we will still do our 2nd cut in square bales though. Those will go directly into the loft for feeding pregnant and nursing ewes in the winter. Next year haying starts the 2nd or 3rd week in June. Depending on the weather. This has been a ridiculous year. We should be doing 2nd cut now, not trying to finish 1st cut on fields. But hubby's friend's equipment ALL broke down one piece at a time and is ALL unusable at this time. That is the main reason I've been buying equipment. As much as I may dislike aspects of my job, thank God that I still have it at this time to purchase all this equipment!!!

Time for me to get off the computer and get some work done. Enjoy your Labor Day!!

TTFN.
